Your root canal removed the infected pulp inside the tooth and sealed the canals to stop the infection from returning. Recovery is usually straightforward. Follow these instructions to protect the tooth and stay comfortable while it heals.
The First 24 Hours
- Do not eat until the numbness from the anesthetic wears off — you can bite your cheek or tongue without realizing it
- Avoid chewing on the treated side while the tooth still has a temporary filling or crown
- Take pain medication as prescribed, even before pain starts — it works better when taken proactively
- Slight tenderness or soreness for a few days is normal and settles with over-the-counter medication
Eating and Drinking
- Stick to soft, cool foods for the first day — yogurt, smoothies, soup at room temperature, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs
- Avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks for a few days, especially if you feel sensitivity
- Chew on the opposite side of your mouth for at least 24 hours, and until your permanent crown is placed
- Skip hard, sticky, or crunchy foods (nuts, ice, hard candy, chewing gum) until the tooth is fully restored
Oral Hygiene
- Brush and floss as normal, but be gentle around the treated tooth
- Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon in 8 ounces of warm water) 2–3 times a day for the first few days
- Do not skip flossing near the treated tooth — food can wedge in the temporary filling and cause discomfort
About the Temporary Filling or Crown
Most root canal treatments finish with a temporary filling or a temporary crown until your permanent restoration is placed. The temporary is designed to hold up for about 2–4 weeks but is not as strong as your final dental crown. Avoid chewing hard foods on that tooth and keep your permanent-crown appointment. Waiting too long can cause the tooth to fracture, and a fractured root-canaled tooth often cannot be saved.
What’s Normal vs. What to Call About
Normal: mild soreness or tenderness when biting, slight gum sensitivity, a feeling that the tooth is “different” for a few days.
Call the office right away if you experience:
- Severe pain or throbbing that does not respond to medication
- Visible swelling in your face, cheek, or gums
- A fever above 101°F
- An allergic reaction (rash, itching, difficulty breathing)
- The temporary filling or crown falls out
- Your bite feels uneven — sometimes the temporary needs a quick adjustment
